World’s top 3 conference in IT area

“I will assist Korean scholars entering Europe”

Moon, Songchun, professor at KAIST College of Business, has become an Asia representative director of board at Euromicro, a European IT conference. Euromicro is one of the world’s top three conferences along with Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). For the next two years, he will actively encourage IT researches from Asian countries to be published in European journals and to be invited over to international conferences. He has been elected as a member of board of directors at 41st conference meeting held at Limassol, Cyprus, on October 2nd.

On a telephone interview held on 4th, he said, “I have made lots of presentations at the conferences for past three decades and actively interacted with the members of conference. I think that has been appreciated now.” Majority of the board members of Euromicro are from Europe. Professor Moon is the first Korean member of this board.

He was heavily into computer since he was in high school. He entered Soongsil University, which was the only university with computer science major at the time, and became the first computer scientist in Korea.
He developed ‘IM’, for the second time in the world, which is a database engine of that of Oracle. He has been primarily active in Europe rather than America. In this year, he is a visiting professor at Newcastle University in UK, and teaching at a national university in Ireland.

To quote, “I would like to become a stepping stone for helping future Korean scholars entering Europe. I hope lots of Korean scholars can settle in a place like Europe which has strong tradition.”
