Guidance for 2021 Winter Semester Schedule and Course Registration 2021-11-08Hit:357

We'd like to make an announcement of 2021 Winter Semester information as below. KAIST is running course registration system based on the randomly selected method for seasonal semesters as well as regular semesters. 

Also, since last summer semester, students on a leave of absence will be able to apply for Winter/winter semester courses as an auditing student, so please refer to it.

※ Beginning of Winter 2021 classes : 2021.12.20(Mon) / End of Winter 2021 classes : 2022.01.28(Fri)

※ Like this Fall semester, all Winter semester courses will take place online. However, the operation of both online and offline classes will be allowed for the below cases.

   ① Undergraduate and graduate courses that are experiment/lab based and have a strong need for offline classes

   ② Main Campus : Graduate courses with a course number or 600 or higher    

   ③ Seoul Campus : Graduate courses

   ④ All other classes shall take place online, except courses that have received authorization for offline classes because there is a strong need

1. 2021 Winter Semester Course registration

A. Course lists : Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr) ⇒ Academic System ⇒ Courses Offered

 

B. Eligible applicants and credits for the Winter semester

 1) Eligibility for application : Enrolled students(except for students expected to graduate in August 2021) and students on an academic leave of absence(as an auditing student)

 2) Number of credits

  9 credits, no limit on the number of courses

      ※ A maximum of 9 credits (including research credits and AU) is allowed (applicable to undergraduate, master's and Ph.D. program students).

  6 credits limiting the number of courses to 2 courses

      ※ A maximum of 6 credits (including research credits and AU) is allowed per seasonal semester (max. 2 courses per semester (6 credits), max. 3 courses throughout the degree program (9 credits).

      ※ Guidelines for Winter/Winter Semester Course Registration Open to Students on a Leave of Absence

      → Since last summer semester, students on a leave of absence will be able to apply for Winter/winter semester courses.

      → Students on a leave of absence may apply for Winter/winter semester courses as an auditing student. 

      → For students on a leave of absence, auditing is allowed only for Winter/winter semester courses. A student can apply for up to 2 courses per semester(6 credits)and up to 3 Winter/winter courses throughout their degree program(9 credits)

      → Students should apply for credit recognition of credits earned from audited Winter/winter semester courses before the end of their final semester.(Students cannot apply for credit recognition while on a leave of absence)

 

C. Course registration : Randomly selected system

1) Course registration Period : 2021. 11. 22(Mon) 12:30~ 11. 25(Thur) 23:59【4 days】

From 12:30 to before 23:59 on November 22(Mon) (Open enrollment without ceilings for all the courses)

      ※ November 23(Tue) : No registration is possible and random selection is processed.

      ※ Randomly selected students list for the courses will be announced before 12:00, November 24(Wed)

      → Students will be randomly selected for the courses that exceed their enrollment ceilings; Randomly selected students list for the courses will be announced. (on portal)

      → Courses of students who are not selected will be automatically deleted on their system.

From 12:30 on November 24(Wed) to before 23:59 on November 25(Thur)

(Students may register for the remaining courses on a first-come first-serve basis)

 

2) System opening hours

From 12:30 to before 23:59 on November 22(Mon)

From 12:30 on November 24(Wed) to before 23:59 on November 25(Thur)

(Students may register for the remaining courses on a first-come first-serve basis)

 

3) Use : Web System(Academic System)

      ※ Web registration at http://portal.kaist.ac.kr

  

4) Procedure : ① Honor Code⇒ ② Check the class lists on Web⇒ ③ Register for classes on Web (not available on mobile equipment)

      ※ Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)

      ① [Honor Code Pledge] : At the main page of academic system, online signature is available to enhance sense of ethics and responsibility (*Consent is required once every semester from 10 days before the start date of course registration to the end of course add/drop period/ Effective from 2021 Fall semester).

      ② Academic System⇒ Check the class lists on Web

      ③ Academic System⇒ Click ⇒ 'Course Registration’ Click⇒ Register for classes on Web

 

5) Matters to be attended while registering

      ① Students must apply for courses during the given period only.

      ② Students included in the randomly selected list (of the courses exceed their enrollment ceilings) cannot cancel the courses during the registration period.(However, during the Add/drop period, students may change or cancel their classes.)

      ③ Online application system requires a portal access (with PORTAL ID)

      ※ For more information regarding PORTAL ID, access https://iam.kaist.ac.kr

      ④ Students who are expected to graduate this February cannot register for seasonal semester.(Except for the students who meet graduation requirements by taking special seasonal semester courses)

      Course registration guide for special seasonal semester

      → Students can graduate in the semester with seasonal semester if they meet the graduation requirements by taking seasonal semester courses that are operated within 3 weeks of the first half of the seasonal semester.

     (▶Refer to list of courses offered for Winter semester/ Check the Remarks column/ Limited to courses operated during 2021.12.20.~ 2022.01.07If you register for a special seasonal semester course, please notify your department official who is in charge of graduation assessment so that the course can be reflected in your    

         graduation requirements.)

      ⑤ For students on a leave of absence who wish to apply for Winter/winter semester courses.

      → Students on a leave of absence may apply for Winter/winter semester courses as an auditing student.

      → Students should apply for credit recognition of credits earned from audited Winter/winter semester courses before the end of their final semester.(Students cannot apply for credit recognition while on a leave of absence)

 

 

2. Payment for regular and Retake Winter courses

Graduates : If you take the graduate course, you don't have to pay tuition fee, but if you take the course for undergraduate or the course whose code started with 400 among the course which can be counted as either bachelor or master/Ph.D courses credits, you're required to pay tuition fee.



3. Winter Semester Course Add/Drop

 A. Course Add/ Drop Period : 2021. 12. 15(Wed) 9:30~ 12. 22(Wed) 23:55

     ※ You can apply for the courses even if you didn't apply for any courses during the previous application course registration period.(within enrollment limit) However, course registration is not possible after the deadline of course add/drop period, so please comply with the period.

 

B. Opening hours of course registration system

[Graduate] From 09:30 on the first day to before 23:59 on the last day of each course add/drop period

    → Course Add/Drop available all time during the period

 

C. Procedure :  Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)⇒ Academic System⇒ ’Class Enrolment’ Click→ Add new classes or drop/change classes at ‘Course Registration’ or ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ Menu. (not available on mobile equipment)

1) ‘Course Registration’menu Select Course→ Add Courses with ‘Application’ button or Drop the courses with ‘Delete’ button

      ※ Additional function to make ‘Wish List’ for desired courses(→ Available since 2020 winter semester) : By adding a "wish" button in the list of courses offered at course registration menu, students can make and save a course wish list. The saved wish list will be displayed at the top of the list when viewing the offered courses.

2) ‘Course Registration (Exceptions)’menu Select Course→ Select Application Type & Application Reason→ Click Confirm Request

       If the approval of the course instructor is required, such as a special lecture with different subtitle or courses exceeding enrolment limit, use the Course Registration(Exception) menu.

      ※ ‘Course registration(exception)’ menu will be closed two days before the course Add/Drop period ends. Applications that remain unapproved until two days before the course Add/Drop period ends will be automatically cancelled. Students must take the necessary measures before the deadline.

      ※ If necessary, students should submit the course add/drop application in paper form(Graduate) to the Academic Registrar’s Team with signature from the course professor by working hour(12/22. Wed. 18:00) of course Add/Drop period.

  

 

4. Winter Semester Course Withdrawal

A. Course Withdrawal Period : 2021. 12. 23(Thur) 12:30 ~ 12. 31(Fri) 23:59

      ※ During the course withdrawal period, only course drop is possibleStudents are not allowed to withdraw from courses after the given period.

 

B. System opening hours : From 12:30(daytime) of the starting day of the drop period to before 23:59(night) of the end day of the drop period 

 Course registration(exception)’ menu will be closed two days before the course withdrawal  period ends. Applications that remain unapproved until two days before the course withdrawal period ends will be automatically cancelled. Students must take the necessary measures before the deadline.


C. Procedure : Same as the procedure for Add/Drop courses

      ※ Log on to Portal(http://portal.kaist.ac.kr)⇒ Academic System⇒ ‘Class Enrolment’ Click

      → Drop classes at ‘Course Registration’ or ‘Course Registration(Exceptions)’ Menu. (not available on mobile equipment)
