“What I Can Do is..” A College Professor Who has been supporting the Descendants of Independence Patriots for 4 years.

It became recently known that a college professor has been supporting the descendants of independence patriots for 4 years. Tae-Hyeon Kim, a professor at KAIST Business school, has been providing scholarships, donated by him and his former grad school classmates, to five descendants of independence patriots since 2013.

The five members, supported by Professor Kim, are the high school students, who failed the Young Korean Academy’s selection process for scholarship students. Although the Young Korean Academy has been selecting tens of high school students based on an individual’s family income situation for the support of 800,000 won every year, due to the limited scholarship, many of the applicants fail the selection process. Professor Kim was recommended two additional scholarship candidates by the Young Korean Academy in 2013, and he has been providing them with the annual scholarship of 800,000 Won until they finish high school education; furthermore, Professor Kim received three additional candidates through recommendation last year.

Professor Kim has been interested in independence patriots since 2007, when he was working for his doctoral program at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management. After watching the news anchor on CNN, explaining the patriotism of the dead U.S armies during wars and calling them as “American Heroes”, Professor Kim realized the significance of showing endless respect to those who sacrificed their lives for their country. Thinking of helping those who sacrificed themselves for their nation after his studies, Professor Kim put his plan into action by initiating support for the descendants of independence in 2013, a year and a half after he became appointed as a professor at KAIST. Furthermore, Professor Kim served as a career mentor to the selected scholarship candidates by inviting them to the college campus for their career counseling.

Although Professor Kim has been creating scholarship funds with his acquaintances, he plans to provide scholarship solely through his self-donation from this year; Professor Kim further asked the Young Korean Academy for the recommendation of two to three high school candidates for scholarship this year. Professor Kim manifested that he is willing to support other individuals who sacrificed themselves for their country besides the descendants of independence patriots.
