Outsider CEO of combination between IT-Management will change the future

Special Seminar for the 10th Anniversary of the Graduate School of Information Media Business Administration at KAIST, “Future Society Hyper-connectivity with IoT”

Raising a professional manager in information media to lead the era of AI revolution

“This is the era where all conventional businesses become the IT (information technology) businesses. The KAIST graduate school of information media business administration has performed the studies on management and the cutting-edge IT media technology such as social media, big data, Internet of Things (IoT), and block chain to lead the future study. Recently, to raise professional managers of information media in the era of quaternary industrial revolution led by the artificial intelligence (AI) technology and big data analysis, we have established the intensive course for business analytics to re-innovate our education program.” (Lee, Hee-seok, President of the Graduate School of KAIST Information Media)

The special seminar for the 10th anniversary of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) graduate school of information media has been held at the Hongneung Campus of KAIST with the theme of “Future Society Hyper-connectivity with IoT” on 23rd. The graduate school of KAIST information media was opened in 2006, and it has been raising professional entrepreneurs in information media with comprehension about general management capability and about technology of data analysis and IT media.

At the special seminar on this day, the 10-year performance by the graduate school of KAIST information media has been recollected, and the next 10-year vision has been shared. Oh Myeong former deputy prime minister and Minister of Science and Technology (honorary president of State University of New York Korea), Yun Chang-beon former senior secretary for future strategies bureau of the presidential office (advisor at Kim & Chang Law Firm), Lee Sang-hun chief director at the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Kim I-sik executive director at KT Big Data Center, Kim Ji-hee executive director at Samsung Electronics AI Team, Shim Jae-hee CEO of nTels, Lee Myeong-ho vice president at Korea Information Society Development Institute, and over 100 relative personnel joined this seminar.

In the congratulatory address, Oh Myeong former vice prime minister and Minister of Science and Technology has stated,
“It is said that about 50% of the current jobs will disappear in 30 years, and reflecting the fact that the farming population of Korea decreased from about 80% back when I was young to 6%, this sounds right. With the revolution of AI, an unmanned vehicle will emerge, there will be no more taxi driver, and professional careers like lawyer, doctor, and reporter will be affected as well. Education will be the only solution to resolve such issue. The graduate school of KAIST information media is responsible for discovery of more manpower to lead the transition of AI revolution, leading Korea as an advanced country.”

The KAIST school of business administration with the graduate school of information media was opened in 1996, even before the existence of global technology-based corporations like Google and Amazon, to lead the paradigm of new business administration education combining technology with business administration.

Joined the seminar on this day, Kang Seong-mo president of KAIST has stated, “The business innovation nowadays is implemented not by those with much experience in conventional industries but by the “outside” CEO comprehending IT and combining this into business administration. Reed Hastings of Netflix to shake the film industry and Travis Kalanick of Uber to shake the taxi industry are the exemplary ones. The business innovators in next 10 years will emerge from the “Future Society Hyper-connectivity with IoT” just like the theme of seminar today. I assure you that the graduate school of KAIST information media business administration and alumni will be at the center of innovation of information media.”

The essence of job will be changed
… A new education system and foundation spirit are required.
The quaternary industrial revolution. The experts are saying that the quaternary industrial revolution led by AI, VR, and IoT after information revolution by Internet technology already began. How does the era of quaternary industrial revolution prospected by the industrial experts of Korea and the professors of KAIST graduate school of information media business administration look like?

Through the keynote address of “The Wave of ICT Technology and the Quaternary Industrial Revolution,” Lee Sang-hun chief director of ETRI has stated, “In the era of quaternary industrial revolution, all objects will have artificial intelligence to become the hyper-intellect organic body to bring the era of ‘Digital Organic Ecosystem.’ The time of AI 1.0 to implement this technology of real-time translation of 8 languages by downloading one application on your mobile phone already emerged. The era of AI 2.0 of ‘hyper-connectivity and hyper-evolution’ to have combination between virtual space and physical space and similarity between AI and human brain will come soon.”

After the keynote address, Ahn Jae Hyeon KAIST professor of graduate school of information media business administration led the panel discussion. The experts in charge of big data, artificial intelligence, and IoT have accentuated that this “foundation spirit” for diverse trial is required for industrial application not to limit the quaternary industrial revolution within the theoretical argument.

Kim I-sik executive director of KT Big Data Center has accentuated the necessity of “foundation spirit” to make a service helpful for daily life by using the big data. Director Kim has stated, “Many large corporations are making infrastructure and platform like the big data center, but these are just stages. In fact, if there is no performer on this stage, this is an issue. This issue may be resolved not by businesses by large corporations but by business foundation by young generation.”

Shim Jae-hee CEO of nTels has predicted that the business foundation to create a new value out of nothing will lead the industrial innovation as the essence of conventional job will change in the quaternary industrial revolution. CEO Shim has said, “The smart phone emerged to lead more consumption of contents by people. If people begin to ride on unmanned vehicles, they may consume contents during the time they use to spend for driving, and thus the content consumption will increase rapidly. Likewise, as people’s life changes by the quaternary industrial revolution, people have to think of what to require with that change.”

The discussion about new policy and importance of education system for the quaternary industrial revolution has continued. Lee Myeong-ho vice president of Korea Information Society Development Institute has mentioned, “The core of hyper-connectivity society is spontaneous blending and creative idea. The government shall make the system and support knowledge, people, capital, and other resources to flow well.”

Kim Ji-hee executive director at Samsung Electronics AI Team has said, “Of course the artificial intelligence will affect our society by much, but there are not many people to comprehend about AI well yet. People usually think AI as imitating human brain, but there are various fields besides this. The education system to raise professional manpower in various fields to apply AI is required.”
