KAIST nominated as one of the most innovative universities in Asia for 3 consecutive years2018-06-20Hit:907

Consider this, even though the translation is different:

KAIST is named the most innovative university in Asia for 3 consecutive years.

KAIST has been ranked in first place among the most innovative universities in Asia for three consecutive years. According to Reuters’ announcement on June 5th, KAIST, the University of Tokyo, and the Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) ranked first, second, and third place respectively in the ‘2018 Reuters Top 75: Asia’s Most Innovative Universities’. Four top universities in South Korea, including Seoul National University (4th) and Sungkyunkwan University (8th), were selected as members of the Reuters’ top 10 innovative universities. Four Japanese universities were included in the list – Tokyo University (2nd), Osaka University (6th), Kyoto University (7th), and Tohoku University (9th). Considering the ranking of all universities, Korean universities are more innovative than Japanese universities

Collaborating with Clarivate Analytics, Reuters has selected the most innovative university in Asia since 2016. Universities in the Asia-Pacific region that contribute to the development of new technologies by leading high tech scientific research and creation of new markets and industry are highly evaluated. Patent applications and indexes for cited articles are the main evaluation criteria

According to Reuters, KAIST has remained in the top position since 2016, the first year of evaluation. POSTECH has risen gradually by one rank every year from 5th place since 2016. On the other hand, Seoul National University, rose to second place last year from third place in 2016 and fell again to fifth place this year. Among the 75 top innovation universities in Asia in 2018, the list includes 20 Korean universities, smaller than last year’s 22 universities in the ranking.

KAIST president Shin Sung-Chul said, "In the era in which the first mover leads the fourth industrial revolution, we cannot survive by catch-up research. KAIST focuses on the quality of the research rather than quantitative-based research, and it seems that the ideology of our university has brought innovative achievements.”

According to a Clarivate Analyst, "KAIST has filed more patents than any other university in the ranking, and has earned high marks in patent pending quotes that assess the frequency with which other institutional researchers cite patents and articles."

Meanwhile, three universities have entered the new rankings for the first time this year, all of them are Chinese universities, including China University of Mining and Technology (56th), Shandong University (67th), and a Xiàmén University (74th). Unlike the European and North American Innovation Rankings, in which 15 universities newly entered the rankings, there were few new universities in Asia included in the list.
