In January, KGSF Alumni Gathering took place in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with the attendance of four Cambodian alumni members- Vongsokunty Koun, You Chheang (FMBA 2012), Ratana Khom (FMBA 2013), and Choung Keang Lim (FMBA 2014). Channeary Vann, another member of FMBA 2013, couldn’t join the gathering since she was on leave of absence for childbirth. During the gathering, the group had a nice time talking about memories of school, life at KAIST, their present lives and recent news about KCB. They also reminisced about their experiences at KGSF with its challenging courses, tight course schedule and strict grading. At the end, they laughed about the memories with a big sense of accomplishment from both KAIST and their current workplaces.

The next two days, the Cambodian alumni members invited Professor Kim to their working places- The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunication, Ministry of Economy and Finance and the National Bank of Cambodia- and guided him around the ministries and arranged some meetings with their senior colleagues. During the visit, the senior officials including Mr. Khou Vouthy, the Director of Economic Research and International Cooperation Department at the Central Bank of Cambodia told Professor Kim that two KAIST alumni employees are the leading staff members and they are taking charge of important tasks in the bank. When Professor Kim asked about what area of professional knowledge their institution would request KGSF to teach, they answered that analytical tools are essential so that employees can analyze the micro and macroeconomic phenomenon appropriately.

Through this visit, the 6th KGSF Alumni Association has been established in Cambodia as of January 24, 2018 and Mr. Choung Keang Lim (FMBA 2014) was elected as the representative of the group. He will be managing their regular meetings, and he will be in charge of communication between the alumni and the university.

He commented “First of all, I am very proud of KAIST and being a KAIST graduate. This is why I was pleased when Professor Kim visited Cambodia and workplaces of Cambodian alumni. Before his visit, we barely had the time to catch up because everyone seemed so busy with their own work and lives. However, with Professor Kim’s visit, we were able to come together as a group and welcome our professor. At the gathering, we had good quality time sharing our latest stories and happenings. In addition, we had a good dinner time together with a pleasant atmosphere. On our way home, we couldn’t finish talking about how much fun we had together that night.

We would like to sincerely thank Professor Kim for visiting us in Cambodia, and a special thanks to KAIST for preparing an alumni network session. This kind of gathering really builds up better relationships with other KAIST alumni. We do hope that KGSF will continuously provide this kind of opportunity for all their alumni and countries.”

In addition, Professor Kim commented, “I was very glad to see the Cambodian alumni members working ardently at their governmental institutions, taking important positions, and finally contributing to the development of the Cambodian economy. Phnom Penh was also full of vitality and dynamism where many high new buildings are under construction here and there in the city, and the people and many kinds of transportation move fast.”

In our next edition, we will cover our alumni gathering in Mongolia which happened in August! We hope to see many of our other alumni in the near future and look forward to hearing from those that are interested in becoming alumni representatives of their country/region!
