[Interview] Jae Kyu Lee, a professor in KAIST College of Business2013-06-20Hit:4626

There is need for experts who can deal with climate change and changes in the international situation.

KAIST College of Business organized the world’s first educational institute to nurture experts on Green Finance.

[Today Energy Reporter 김응기] “It is important to nurture experts not only in green technology but also in green finance who can deal with climate change.”

Jae Kyu Lee, a professor in KAIST College of Business, explained the background of organizing KAIST Graduate School of Green Growth.

Professor Lee said, “The world recognizes the seriousness of fossil resource depletion and climate change, and it has made an effort to deal with these problems.” He also said “We cannot circumvent these problems caused by climate change, so we need a long-term plan for green finance.”

KAIST College of Business will organize the Graduate School of Green Growth. KAIST Graduate School of Green Growth has three programs – the Green Finance Masters, the Green MBA, and the Green Policy Masters and Doctoral Program. The goal of Green Finance is to nurture green business experts, and the Green MBA aims to nurture entrepreneurs who will establish green business and lead green finance. Moreover the goal of Green Policy is to nurture green policy experts who can play an active role in an international organization such as Green Climate Fund (GCF).

A lack of green finance experts causes the absence of specialized companies in green technology and a lack of experts on national energy policy. Moreover Korea does not have enough green and environmental experts at the international level, even though the importance in green technology and environment has risen. Therefore a green finance expert training program requires support from the Korean government to lead the green technology and environment field.

Professor Lee said, “Green technology lacks leaders who can industrialize and manage it, while there are many experts on green technology and companies concerned with environment.” He also explained, “The goal of KAIST Graduate School of Green Growth is to nurture global green finance leaders.”

Additionally, Professor Lee said, “The economic recession in new and renewable energy industries is continuing, and the whole world is reconstructing.” And he said, “To turn crisis into opportunity, a green finance expert training program is necessary.”

Professor Lee added, “The first purpose of KAIST Graduate School of Green Growth is to nurture comprehensive green finance experts on energy conservation, nuclear safety, and CO2 collection, as well as new and renewable energy. Then we expect them to deal with environmental policies and the change of environmental strategies in a variety of areas.”

KAIST Graduate School of Green Growth is the world’s first educational institute to nurture experts on Green Finance. Professor Lee has ambitions to make Korea into the center of green technology and to make new research education programs.

The Master’s Degree in Green Policy will be organized on September 2013, and The Master’s and Doctor’s Degree in Green Finance and Green MBA will be organized on February 2014.
