The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning said Sunday it successfully held a preparatory meeting Friday for next year’s quadrennial conference held by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

During the meeting, dubbed the “Model Plenipotentiary Conference,” participants held discussions aimed at increasing awareness of next year’s ITU meeting.

Korean undergraduates and graduates discussed issues to be on the agenda, the ministry said.

Better management of e-waste was the top issue at the meeting. Fifty local undergraduates and graduates participated in the event,” a ministry spokeswoman said.

"A final proposal and some of issues that they hope to be addressed will be submitted to the ministry and ITU for possible adoption by member countries.”

Participants of Friday’s meeting included Hamadoun Toure, secretary-general of the ITU and Yoon Jong-rok, vice minister of the science ministry.

The ministry said the model conference will be expanded next year by inviting more international students as Korea wants to promote its advanced technologies abroad.

The plenipotentiary conference is an international treaty conference organized every four years by the ITU.

This is the highest-level policy event of the union and is where member countries agree to the overall strategy, budget, leadership and direction for the next four-year period.

The 2014 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference will be held from October 20 to November 7 in Busan.

Countries will adopt new resolutions, decisions and recommendations that will shape the ITU’s work for the coming years.
