| Abstract | This paper argues that a significant amount of effort in information systems (IS) research is spent in empirical testing of a type of theory, termed Axiomatic Theory. Axiomatic Theory is defined as theory that can be accepted as truth without the need for further scientific proof within a specific knowledge domain such as the Information Systems field. Axiomatic theories in the IS field are classified into three types depending upon the justification sources: Basic Axiomatic Theory, Inherited Axiomatic Theory and Visionary Axiomatic Theory. According to our analysis of 573 hypotheses from 64 representative IS theories, 64.2 percent of hypotheses in theories are regarded as axiomatic and 39 percent of papers have hypotheses that are all axiomatic.
To elaborate the knowledge refinement process, we describe the process of identifying boundary conditions of axiomatic theories, and discuss the issue of measuring the relative importance of axiomatic factors when they coexist. Since the confirmatory tests of axiomatic theories create only very marginal contribution to knowledge, we propose a complementary research paradigm termed Theory-Evaluates-Data Paradigm which is suitable for research with axiomatic theories. We contrast this paradigm with the Data-Tests-Theory Paradigm that is currently popular for empirical testing. |
