| Abstract | Using a unique panel data set of 30 countries for the 2000?2013 period, we examine whether ?nancial market development promotes the deployment of renewable energy on a global scale. In particular, we conjecture that countries with well-developed ?nancial markets experience growth in the renewable energy sector due to easier access to external ?nancing. We ?nd that renewable sectors that are relatively more dependent on debt and equity ?nancing grow disproportionately faster in countries with developed ?nancial markets. Our re-sults support the view that ?nancial development leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions by addressing the role of ?nancial markets in deploying renewable energy. |
