[Abstract]
Organizational and sociological research on status usually assume that status orders are self-reproducing, leading to cumulative advantages for high status actors. Given the tendency for status reproduction, how do new actors break in and achieve status gains or overcome the disadvantages associated with being low status? The studies in this presentation offer glimpses into the mechanisms through which status disadvantages are overcome by low status actors. The first study looks at how lower status U.S. firms use employment-based corporate social responsibility to substitute for the employment advantages associated with being high status. The second study examines how Major League Baseball players accrue status. In this study, we argue that too much status can be a burden by 1) creating unrealistic performance expectations and 2) leading to attention exhaustion in key audiences.
