Abstract:
Shared experience (i.e., experience working together in prior projects) among software project team members is known to affect the software project team’s overall performance. However, little is known about whether this effect is influenced by other factors. This study examines the outcome of shared experience as a moderating factor, i.e., whether prior projects where project team members worked together were successful or not. We find that the effect of shared experience on the software project team’s performance shows an inverse U-shaped curve concerning the outcome of the shared experience. This finding indicates that the effect of shared experience becomes weakest when the shared experience was either highly successful or highly unsuccessful but becomes comparatively stronger when the shared experience was intermediate between these two extremes—moderately successful or unsuccessful. Moreover, we find that this inverse U-shaped curve flattens as time passes. This study makes theoretical contributions by finding nonlinear moderating effects of the outcome of shared experience on the effect of shared experience and its depreciation caused by elapsed time. It also provides practical implications for software project management such as project staffing.
