Overview
Youngsuk ‘YS’ Chi is an international businessman and a global thought leader in the publishing, education and information solutions industries. As Chairman of Elsevier, the world’s leading scientific, technical and medical information and analytics company, he works directly with key stakeholders in government, academia and industry to support over 30 million scientists, students and health information professionals around the world. In his role as Director of Corporate Affairs for RELX, Elsevier’s parent company, he is responsible globally for government affairs, corporate communications and corporate responsibility across all four of the group’s market segments: STM, Risk & Business Analytics, Legal, and Exhibitions. Based in London and New York, Chi travels extensively to engage with scientific and medical research communities, deliver thought leadership on key trends and advise stakeholders, boards and groups across industries. Chi serves as Distinguished Invited Professor at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and also as an independent director of Ingram Industries Inc. (Nashville, USA).
Chi joined Elsevier in June 2005 as Vice Chairman and Head of Global Academic and Customer Relations. He became a Member of the Management Committee of RELX in May 2009 and in December 2009, Chi accepted additional responsibility as CEO of Elsevier Science & Technology (S&T). As an industry leader, he has represented the interests of educational, professional and scholarly authors and publishers on the global stage. Chi has served terms as the Chair and Immediate Past Chair of the Association of American Publishers as well as the President and Past President of the International Publishers Association.
Chi was born in 1961 as the youngest child of Ambassador and Madame Sungkoo Chi. He graduated cum laude from Princeton University with an A.B. in Economics and earned his MBA in Finance at Columbia University. Upon completing an eight-year stint with American Express International Bank in the US, Mexico, the UK, France, and Singapore, he joined Ingram Micro, the world’s largest distributor of computer products in 1992. There he supervised the growth of Ingram Micro Europe from its first central warehouse in Lille, France, and founded Ingram Micro’s Asian businesses.
In 1996, Chi joined Ingram Book Group as Chief Operating Officer, and subsequently held several President and CEO positions at Ingram. He co-founded Lightning Source Inc., the industry’s first print-on-demand distributor and e-book delivery services provider, which won numerous book and technology industry awards for its historic innovations. In 2001, Chi joined Random House, the world’s largest general interest book publisher, as its Chief Operating Officer and moved quickly to the position of President. Later, he became the founding Chairman of Random House Asia, where he led efforts to make Random House the first foreign trade book publisher with local language publishing in Japan and Korea.
Chi is actively involved in numerous educational, artistic, and charitable organizations. He currently serves on the boards of Princeton University Press, the Ban Ki-Moon Foundation and KAIST USA Foundation; as well as the advising boards of several universities including KAIST (Daejeon, Korea), DGIST (Daegu, Korea), University of Surrey (Surrey, England) and Southern Federal State University (Rostov-on-Don, Russia). Chi also co-founded the Korean American Community Foundation and Good Seeds Foundation and has served on leadership boards of Princeton University, the United States Golf Association, the Korea Society and Family & Children Services.
