On the 27th, Yoo Young Wook (left), a KAIST MBA student, is concentrating on his research in the lab, located on the 2nd floor of KAIST business school building, Seoul Dondaemoon-gu Haeki-dong, that is open for 24 hrs.
We met Yoo Young Wook (33), a KAIST MBA student, at KAIST business school building, located in Dondaemoon-ku, Haeki-dong, Seoul, on the 27th. He said, “It is amazing that I get to spend time with people from various fields in this place and do research together,” as his impression of the school. Yoo had worked three years in the research & development (R&D) as well as sales department of one of the biggest companies in the country. However, in 2007, he quit the job, and got an admission from KAIST Techno MBA. Once he knew that he lacked knowledge in business management since he used to study engineering in college and he wanted to focus on the field of strategic planning he decided to go for MBA.
KAIST students need English ability due to the fact that more than 80% of the classes are taught in English and all the textbooks are in English. Kim Mi Hae, a former Finance MBA student, who is now working for JP Morgan, an America’s investment bank, pointed out various programs such as classes in English, seminars with guest speakers from international, and exchange programs as great advantages offered by the school. All of the currently enrolled Finance MBA students are required to join the exchange program during the 1st semester of their second year at one of the seven schools in the U.S., England, and Canada such as University of Rochester and take courses there.
KAIST MBA students also mentioned a human network as the school’s strong point; the students can meet other people from various fields and share their thoughts and cultures. The school offers all their students an individual desk they can use for 24 hrs and a dorm. None of MBA schools worldwide offers this unique study environment except KAIST Business School.
The school reallocates MBA students’ offices every semester after considering their nationality, work experience, age, and sex. “The biggest advantage is that you get creative ideas, and learn to communicate with others as one of the team members and get used to work in group,” said Ravi Kumar, a dean of KAIST Business School. The fact that KAIST MBA is the first MBA School in the country and the biggest in size affects the human network between alumni. KAIST started MBA course in 1996. Since then, there have been about 2,200 MBA graduates. The school is proud of the fact that 100 % of their students get employed.
The school is proud of the fact that 100 % of the students get a job after they graduate; these graduates are working as core members for global companies such as Deloitte, McKinsey, IBM, and Morgan Stanley. The school also received certifications including AACSB (Association to Advance College Schools of Business International) and The European Quality Improvement System (EQUIS).
Besides the 2-year full-time Techno MBA courses, the school also offers the 1-year full-time IMBA to those who have at least 5 years of work experience, the Executive MBA, a 22-months program on weekends, to people like main supervisors and executives who have at least 9 years and 6 months of business experience, the 2-year full-time Finance MBA to those who want to specialize in the finance field, and, lastly, the full-time 1-year Information Media MBA for students to meet their individual interest.
KAIST MBA recruits new students in October every year, and the school starts in the following January or February. In 2011, the school will accept 350 students total to the programs; 100 students to the Techno MBA, 100 students to the Finance MBA, 50 students to the Information Media MBA, 50 students to the IMBA, and 50 students to the Executive MBA.
