In this section we introduce excellent research papers written by our alumni or current students. The following is a brief introduction of the a longer paper, “An Empirical investigation on competition in the banking sector of Ethiopia” by Merema Kamil Mussa (FMBA 2015)

This paper empirically examines the degree of competition in Ethiopian banking industry using the extensive samples of quarterly bank-level panel data over the periods from 2001 to 2015. The structural analysis based on Concentration Ratio (CR) and Herfindahl-Hirschman Index (HHI) shows that Ethiopian banking industry is highly concentrated and it is dominated by the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE). In addition, the H-statistics of Panzar-Rosse non-structural model confirms that Ethiopian banks operate under monopolistic markets. Despite the recent structural changes and improvements in the Ethiopian banking industry, Ethiopian banking industry is less advanced and undeveloped compared to those of other developing countries. This study recommends that technological investments should become a priority in the banking sector of Ethiopia. It is also important to adapt the best practices from other countries and implement the innovations with proper regulation and supervision.
