Increase in employment of PhDs overseas/ the Korea wave in academics

Dr. Hak-kun Kim of KAIST College of Business appointed as

Professor in Southwest Jiaotong University in China

 

KAIST College of Business stated that Hak-kun Kim Ph.D. in Management Engineering has been appointed as a professor of business management in Southwest Jiaotong University. Dr. Kim will begin his teaching from the upcoming September.

Dr. Kim (31) studied architecture engineering in Korea University, received a master’s degree in Management in Technology from Pohang University of Science & Technology and entered Management Engineering in KAIST College of Business for pursuing a doctoral degree.

 

Dr. Kim published three SSCI articles including ‘Financial Times Top 45’ and three in KCI. Also, he received outstanding paper awards from five finance associations in 2013 and 2014. Moreover, he was recognized for his performance in publishing papers in various internal and external associations including FMA, CAFM, and KFA.

 

Southwest Jiaotong University, where Dr. Kim has been appointed as a professor, was founded in 1896 and is a prestigious university ranked in the top 5% in China. It has 3 million undergraduate students and 5 thousand graduate students and has produced many talented graduates in the past century. Especially, there are many national leaders and experts, professors and entrepreneurs.

 

Dr. Kim’s appointment as professor is exceptional in China in that generally Chinese universities prefer PhDs from the US and Europe. Also, Dr. Kim is offered an excellent salary and benefits; he will focus on research in the first year and will begin teaching four credits (64 hours per year) from the 2nd year.

 

Dr. Kim said that “KAIST College of Business, which operates studies and research in a lab system, has a unique academic atmosphere, and academic exchange among professors, students and global scholars. Under the various support of KAIST College of Business, I was able to publish various papers.” Also, he added that he will lead academic exchange and try to promote Korean business knowledge throughout the world.

 

Management Engineering in KAIST College of Business has been a cradle of management professors. Since the foundation, 43% of the graduates were appointed as professors and 15 of them have been hired in leading schools including Georgia University in US, Durham University in UK and the University of New South Wales in New Zealand.

Recently, employment in universities in China are increasing, leading the Korea Wave in the academic area. Beginning with the appointment of Dr. Kiwoo Park in Singapore National University in 2001, Dr. SangPil Han was invited to City University of Hong Kong in 2008 and Dr. Byungwook Kang was hired to Hong Kong Polytechnic University in 2009. These cases demonstrate the growing recognition of Korea management throughout the world.
