KAIST, SNU Among Asia’s Top 10 Universities The University of Hong Kong topped a list of Asia’s best universities compiled by the Chosun Ilbo and global university evaluation institute QS of the U.K. The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology ranked first at home and seventh Asia-wide, followed on both counts by Seoul National University. SNU outdistanced KAIST in terms of academic quality and recruiter reviews but lagged behind KAIST due to a lower ranking in globalization. The evaluation was conducted among 463 universities in 11 Asian countries, including 106 in Korea, and is the only such survey for the continent. The universities were ranked for competitiveness in four categories -- research quality (60 percent), education quality (20 percent), recruiter review (10 percent) and degree of globalization (10 percent). University of Hong Kong was followed by Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tokyo University, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and Osaka University. Among Korea universities, POSTEC was third at 17th, followed by Yonsei University at 25th, Korea University at 33rd, Ewha Womans University at 42nd, Sungkyunkwan University at 44th, Hanyang University at 46th, Kyunghee University at 57th, and Pusan National University at 58th. The top 100 Asian universities include 17 Korean universities, 33 Japanese, 11 Chinese, seven Indian, six in Hong Kong and two in Singapore. Japanese universities ranked lower on the globalization index but generally higher in research. Tokyo University topped the list of Asian universities in terms of peer review, recruiter review, and citations per paper.
