Professor Betty Chung, Director of the Global Leadership Institute, developed and champions a program, “Doing Business in Korea” in an effort to showcase Korea to the international community AND bridge Korean managers to international exposure. In the past 6 months, with great success, KAIST has hosted over 85 international Executive MBA students from Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore and King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia. Current KAIST MBA and alumni can leverage these groups of international managers for networking, information exchange, relationship building and potential business development opportunities.

One of the most dynamic countries in the world, South Korea has emerged from a chaotic history, and has rightfully ascended the ladder to become a world power. South Korea’s transition from poverty to riches is one of the modern civilization’s most inspirationalstories.

This program allows the international community an exceptional opportunity to experience “how to do business in Korea and its distinctiveness through active engagement of personally seeing, feeling, and tasting the flavors of Korean business and culture. KAIST faculty and industry experts team up to provide both lectures in the classroom and insights at the company site visits to provide a full lens to the Korean business landscape.

Program Description:

■ Gain lessons learned from Korea’s economic transformation - “The Miracle Story,” a nation of poverty to today’s 13th largest economies in less than 50 years.
■ Develop management strategies specific to doing business in Asia.

Testimonials and quotes from past participants highlight both a great interest in learning about Korea as well as a high level of satisfaction with the KAIST “Doing Business in Korea program. In an interview with Dean Aymen Kayal, King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals in Saudi Arabia, he acclaims, “KAIST did an excellent job in organizing our EMBA international academic trip to South KOREA. The program events exposed the students to Korean culture, history, economy, and business environment. The field trips and invited guest speakers were precisely chosen and they really helped in gaining valuable insights to important aspects of the Korean
economy and economic development. The Cross Cultural management lectures received from the experts at KAIST Business School were extremely beneficial and helped integrate the entire experience.”

Professor Abhoy K Ojha, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore also shares his experience through the following description; “The students found the pragmatic insights very useful; the inputs not only sharpened their learning, gathered so far in the classroom, but also useful in future career roles. The lecture sessions were well augmented by lectures by professors of KAIST who variously spoke on sociology, economic policy, and culture to make the students understand the Korean nation in a holistic manner.”

Both faculty and students were excited about the program- the Indian students
from IIMB shared the following perspectives about the Korean people; “The Koreans were excellent hosts, and the warmth, care, affection, wit and spontaneity they exhibited, made the students’ visit a memorable experience. The students of IIMB and KAIST became friends by the end of the tour and new frontiers opened for students on either sides with this meeting and exchange of ideas.” - Indian Institute of Management Bangalore Executive Education Participants.

The “Doing Business in Korea Program” benefits all- the international community,
our KAIST community and Korean companies and managers. It is through the intersection of this kind of collaborative information exchange and exposure that ideas, business or personal relations and potential business opportunities can percolate and brew into a wonderful experience where Koreans and our international partners are sitting around the same table enjoying a cup of coffee together.
